We begin the art season by exploring oil paintings by Kehinde Wiley, one of NewYork city’s most prominent young “art stars.” With impeccable, realistic technique and vivid colors, Wiley portrays contemporary, urban African-Americans in poses from famous paintings in art history. Next, we’ll visit GR N’Namdi Gallery which features work by African-American artists. We’ll conclude at the Thomas McCormick Gallery with work by Bernard Williams, an award winning Chicago artist who explores African- American and tribal cultures in mixed media materials.
Rhona Hoffman Gallery, 118 N. Peoria St., Chicago
Delve into this first major museum exhibition focusing on Leon Golub’s late works entitled Live & Die Like a Lion? The legendary Chicago native (1922-2004) who spent most of his career in NYC has been collected by major museums throughout the world. No longer able to create giant canvases in the last years of his life, Golub produced dramatic and colorful drawings dealing with erotic imagery, depictions of animals, and bold text, bringing his earlier political themes to a more personal level.
