ITINERARY
After stops at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago (8:15 am) and Edens Plaza in Wilmette (8:50 am) to pick up our travelers, we'll head straight to the extraordinary Racine Art Museum (RAM), home to the largest and most significant contemporary craft collection in North America with more than 10,000 objects by nationally and internationally recognized artists. The impressive, 46,000 sq. foot museum was created by architecture firm Brininstool + Lynch, who won the American Architecture Award for their design incorporating renovated, pre-existing buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Bruce W. Pepich, Executive Director and Curator of RAM, will introduce us to the museum and tell us how it started with the goal of elevating the stature of craft to fine arts. Then, we’ll view and discuss elegant, philosophical, and humorous works showing incredible skill in a wide range of mediums, from ceramics, fiber, and wood to metal, glass, and polymer.
Next, we’ll head to gallery OS Projects, which features artists living and working in the Chicago-Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee urban corridor. We’ll see a show by artist Sarah Leuchtner, who uses a variety of materials including paint, collage, zip ties, and chain link fencing to create her striking multimedia artworks.
After a stop for lunch, we’ll head to the 16th Street Studios Artist Community, a former warehouse first established in 1865 as the Racine Wagon and Carriage Company. Since the 1990’s, many artists have moved into the building’s beautiful spaces with exposed beams and good light. We will explore the studios of Curt Emmer, who creates contemporary and traditional quilts and small fiber works, and Diane Levesque, a lively painter and mixed media artist. We'll conclude the trip and head back towards Chicago with drop offs at Edens Plaza in Wilmette (4:45 pm) and Ogilvie Transportation Center in the city (5:30 pm).
